Case under SC/ST act against Amity

Haryana,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Thu, 26 Apr 2012 IANS

Gurgaon, April 26 (IANS) A case has been registered against the Amity University administration here under the stringent SC/ST act following an alleged suicide by a close kin of the Meghalaya chief minister in the campus, a senior police official said Thursday.

First year MBA student Dana Silva M Sangama, 21, was found hanging in her hostel room Tuesday in the university's Pachgaon campus. The academic classes have been suspended since then. The varsity administration unofficially declared a holiday for Wednesday and Thursday.

Hamid Akhtar, DCP (South) said the police have registered a case against the university administration under section 306 of IPC (abetting suicide) and SC/ST act, but no one has been detained. The police will question the university authorities over the suicide, he said.

The deceased was a niece of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangama. He has alleged that his niece committed suicide due to discrimination handed out to her by the university authorities.

On the other hand, Amity University V.P. (media) Savita Mehta told IANS: "We don't have any official information regarding FIR against our administration. University is functioning normally."

Meanwhile, the students of the university will take out a candle march Friday in memory of Dana.

"Tuesday evening we were told that due to the police investigations regarding Dana Silva suicide case, the academic classes would be suspended for two days," some students from the university told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

"MBA students are appearing in the exams and rest of the faculty were under external preparations," they added.
