Man U angry over Facebook's refusal to remove group mocking Munich air disaster

London , Thu, 26 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 26(ANI): Manchester United has blasted social networking website Facebook for refusing to take down a highly sick page that mocks the unfortunate Munich air disaster of 1958.

The group, named 'I like to Munich Munich', features the words 'Ha Ha' above a picture of the ruins of the aircraft, which crashed in 1958 while attempting a take-off from a snowy runway, killing eight United players and 15 others.

A spokesman for Manchester United has called the page 'deeply offensive', and one former player and manager has branded the group's founder 'an idiot'.

The sick page, which was set up by users claiming to be fans of Leeds United, also features sick taunts about the disaster, which took place on February 6, 1958 as United players and staff returned from a European Cup game in Yugoslavia.

It has attracted 1,200 likes, but also lots of fuming comments from offended United supporters and fans.

Facebook's refusal to remove the page has attracted an incensed response from the English champions.

"We are very disappointed that Facebook have chosen not to take it down," The Daily Mail quoted a United spokesman, as saying.

"The site is more than controversial. It is deeply offensive to those who lost their lives - some of whom were not attached to Manchester United," he added.

Despite the rumpus Facebook has refused to step in, insisting the company did not remove groups 'just because they are controversial'.

A spokesman from the social networking site said: "Facebook is a place where people can openly discuss issues and say what they think, governed by reasonable rules."

"Some 845 million people use the site around the world, meaning there will always be views that some people find offensive," he added.

"Pages or groups that express a controversial opinion will not be removed just because they are controversial," he said. (ANI)
