London, April 23 (ANI): Almost 100,000 women in UK have undergone female genital mutilations (FGM), according to reports.
A number of doctors have even offered to carry out FGM on girls aged below 10, The Scotsman reports.
An investigation secretly carried out, has filmed a doctor, a dentist and an alternative medicine practitioner agreeing to carry out the illegal act, or arrange for the operation to be carried out.
However, the doctor and dentist have denied undertaking any unlawful activity.
The practice, which involves the surgical removal of external genitalia and in some cases the stitching of the vaginal opening, is illegal in Britain.
It carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years if found guilty.
Supermodel Waris Dirie, who was mutilated as a child, is strongly opposed to the practice.
"If a white girl is abused, the police come break down the door. If a black girl is mutilated, nobody takes care of her. This is what I call racism," she said. (ANI)
