Economic adviser Basu is speaking the language of IMF and World Bank, says BJP

Varanasi , Sat, 21 Apr 2012 ANI

Varanasi, Apr 21 (ANI): Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi on Saturday flayed the chief economic adviser Kaushik Basu for his remarks on economic reforms in the country, adding he was speaking the language of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

"It is a very dangerous thing, which he has said and the reforms about which he is talking are the one which the IMF and the World Bank want to take place. It implies that the government that should be elected in 2014 should work on the directives of the IMF and the World Bank," said Joshi.

"This is totally unacceptable. India's economic polices would be decided by the representatives elected by the people of India," he added.

Addressing a meeting at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, Basu on April 19 had said that no major economic reforms could take place before the parliamentary elections in 2014.

Basu added that post 2014 elections, country would witness rush of important reforms and after 2015 India would be one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

On Friday, Basu clarified that his statement was misquoted, saying the central message of his talk was the possible European crisis in 2014 and not India's 2014 general elections. (ANI)
