Munda recommends CBI probe in Rajya Sabha polls

Jharkhand,Politics, Thu, 19 Apr 2012 IANS

Ranchi, April 19 (IANS) Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda Thursday recommended a CBI probe in the 2010 and 2012 Rajya Sabha polls, it was officially stated here.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had recommended to the president of India to cancel notification of two Rajya Sabha seats after Rs.2.15 crore was seized on polling day (March 30) on the outskirts of Ranchi by the Jharkhand Income Tax department. The amount was suspected to be payoffs for getting a favourable vote from some legislators.

A fresh notification has been issued for two seats of the Rajya Sabha. The polling will take place May 3.

In 2010, four legislators were caught in a cash-for-votes sting operation by a news channel. Of the four legislators, two belonged to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and one each was from BJP and Congress. The legislators had allegedly sought money to cast their vote in the Rajya Sabha poll.

The vigilance department was handed over the probe in the matter then with Arjun Munda now recommending a CBI probe.
