China,Defence/Security, Wed, 18 Apr 2012 IANS

Beijing, April 18 (IANS) A fleet of US warships will dock at Tien Sa port in Vietnam April 23 for a five-day collaborative programme between the navies of the two countries.

Besides the USS Blue Ridge warship of the US Navy's Fleet 7, the destroyer USS Chafee and the USNS Safeguard, will also participate, the China Daily reported Wednesday.

The welcome ceremony will be attended by US Ambassador to Vietnam David Shear, Fleet 7's Commander and Vice-Admiral Scott Swift, captains of the visiting ships and other US officials and generals.

Several activities will focus on non-battle events, including exchange of skills in maintenance and operations of ships, meetings with the local public, sports exchange, and musical performance.

The then government of North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, was engaged in a brutal war with the government of South Vietnam, supported by the US and other anti-communist countries. Thousands of US soldiers died in the 19-year-long conflict which ended 1975.

The relations between the two countries have gradually improved since.
