Madhya Pradesh CM warns against unilateral decisions on security

New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Monday said coordinated action between state and central governments was needed to tackle internal security challenges and warned that any unilateral decision could prove to be dangerous.

'Despite regular meetings on internal security, the central government is taking unilateral decisions on many issues... whether it relates to creation of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) or proposed amendments to the BSF Act and RPF Act,' Chouhan said, addressing the annual conference of chief ministers on internal security here.

He said the country was facing challenges of terrorism and Left wing extremism that are weakening democratic institutions and constitutional edifice. He stressed on strengthening state forces on the lines of central forces to fight these challenges.

'It needs to be understood that it is not possible to enhance internal security by simply sending central forces rather the strength of the state forces needs to be augmented,' he said.

Chauhan stressed that state governments be consulted before policy-making and enacting new laws.

Chouhan further said that with a view to making state-level anti-terrorist units effective and upgrading them, the central government should bear expenses for first five years on their constitution, training and resources.
