Sydney, Apr 14 (ANI): Australia is considering playing spinner Michael Beer alongside Nathan Lyon for the second Test against the West Indies, temporarily dismantling their pace attack.
The prospect of a turner in Trinidad has left the door open for inexperienced spin twins Lyon and Beer to line up in the same Test XI for the first time.
It would be a major diversion from Australia's recent selection philosophy but coach Mickey Arthur has not ruled it out.
"It's a possibility in Trinidad, looking at the stats - which I've done - over the last two seasons. It has been relatively low-scoring but also spin-friendly. So the temptation could be there. You'd never write that off until you've had a look at conditions," he said.
It would be a massive gamble should John Inverarity ask one of the pacers Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus or Ryan Harris to sit out, The Sydney Morning herald reports.
The trio has been instrumental in Australia's Test resurgence under Michael Clarke, and was pivotal to the success in Bridgetown.
Playing two spinners would also increase the bowling workload of Test No.3 Shane Watson.
Although Australia lost comprehensively the last time they played two spinners in a Test, in Nagpur in 2008 against India when Cameron White and Jason Krejza formed an unlikely spin duo, there is a strong case for them to do so again here, the paper reports. (ANI)
