Cameron invites Suu Kyi to visit Britain

London, April 14 (IANS) British Prime Minister David Cameron has invited Myanmar's pro-democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi to visit the country later this year.

Cameron met Suu Kyi Friday at her lakeside villa in Yangon where she spent 15 of the last 22 years under house arrest as military rulers sought to crush her crusade for democracy. Cameron became the first British prime minister to visit Myanmar.

He is also the first Western leader to visit the country - a former British colony - since Suu Kyi's success in a series of parliamentary by-elections early this month, the Daily Express reported Saturday.

They agreed to press for all EU sanctions against Myanmar to be suspended, as Suu Kyi, 66, spoke of her hopes that her country would find the "happy ending" it craved.

Cameron - at times appearing emotional and awed as he saluted the courage of an inspirational woman - said a visit would give her the opportunity to visit both London and her "beloved" Oxford, where she lived with academic husband Michael Aris and had their two sons.
