20 Chinese held for protesting at airport

China,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Sat, 14 Apr 2012 IANS

Beijing, April 14 (IANS) A total of 20 angry passengers have been "punished" in Chinese metropolis Shanghai for protesting on an airport taxiway and demanding compensation for a delayed flight.

The passengers protested at the Pudong International Airport but did not intend to stop any planes on the taxiway, police told Shanghai Daily.

Police said they have handed down "administrative punishment" to the protesters.

Officials said the passengers should be seriously punished as such behaviour poses a risk to flight safety.

Under whatever reason, nobody should be allowed to enter banned areas of an airport as it threatens the safety of thousands of passengers, they said.

They said the passengers were each paid 1,000 yuan compensation even though the flight was delayed due to bad weather.
