India concerned at North Korea's rocket launch attempt

Delhi,Diplomacy, Fri, 13 Apr 2012 IANS

New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) India Friday voiced serious concern over a rocket launching attempt by North Korea and asked Pyongyang to refrain from such steps that adversely impact peace and stability in the Korean peninsula.

"India notes with serious concern the attempted launch of a rocket by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) which violates United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSC) 1874 and adversely impacts peace and stability in the Korean peninsula," the external affairs ministry said in a statement.

"India calls on DPRK not to undertake actions in violation of UNSC resolutions,"

In defiance of the international community, a rocket was launched from north-west North Korea early Friday, but latest reports suggest the launch failed. The launch is widely seen as defiance of a ban on testing of long-range missiles in the peninsula.

The attempted rocket launch by Pyongyang has elicited widespread international condemnation.
