Brooklyn architect found guilty of supporting Pak-based terror group jailed for 15 years

Washington, Apr 13(ANI): A Brooklyn architect has confessed that he tried to join a jihadist terror group in Pakistan's tribal regions.

US-based Albanian citizen, Agron Hasbajrami, 28, was lured away from his architecture career after surfing Internet websites preaching holy war.

Hasbajrami pleaded guilty in the Brooklyn federal court to providing money and material support to terrorists, and now faces up to 15 years in prison under the terms of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.

Hasbajrami was arrested in September at the John Kennedy airport as he tried to board a flight to Turkey, The New York Post reports.

Brooklyn prosecutors claimed that Hasbajrami was headed to Pakistan's western frontier to seek training from terror groups operating along its border with Afghanistan.

They also charged him with sending at least 1,000 dollars in aid to a jihadist group.

Hasbajrami, however, told Judge John Gleeson that he was intent on meeting up with fellow travellers.

"I tried to help a group of people who I believed were engaged in fighting in Pakistan," he said.

His defense attorney Steve Zissou declined to elaborate on why Hasbajrami decided instead to embrace militancy. (ANI)
