New Delhi, April 13 (IANS) Criticising Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan's detention at a New York airport as "inappropriate and uncalled for", union Patrliamentary Affairs Minister Rajiv Shukla Friday said it is high time the US reviewed its security system.
"The security people at the airport were well aware of his identity and they still detained him. He informed me late last night. Before I could have done anything, he was allowed to leave the airport," said Shukla.
"I think whether it is Shah Rukh or former president of India (A.P.J. Abdul Kalam), if you know the identity of the person and if you have already established the identity of the person, then it is completely uncalled for and inappropriate," he said.
Slamming the US authorities, Shukla said: "It has become a policy of the US that first they do it and then they apologise."
"It is good that the government has already taken it up and condemned it. It is high time the US reviewed its security system," he added.
Shah Rukh was detained at a New York airport for two hours Thursday as he arrived to visit the Yale University where he was honoured as a Chubb Fellow. He was allowed to go only after his hosts intervened and took up the issue with the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, according to sources.
In August 2009 also, the actor was stopped at the Newark airport and released after two hours at the intervention of the Indian consulate in New York.
