Tunnels dug to reach Pakistan avalanche victims

Pakistan,Indo-Pak/Pakistan, Wed, 11 Apr 2012 IANS

Islamabad, April 11 (IANS) Rescuers are digging two tunnels to reach the 139 Pakistani soldiers and civilians who are stuck in thick ice following an avalanche that swept through their camp in Siachen glacier.

The avalanche Saturday morning hit the camp of the Pakistan Army in the Gayari sector in Siachen, the world's highest battleground.

It may take days before rescuers reach the victims who are trapped in a military complex buried under about 80 feet of snow, mud and rocks, reported Dawn citing army officials.

Rescue teams have dug two tunnels to reach them as bad weather impacted progress.

The weather office has forecast more snow for the region in coming days.

The military is being helped by the National Disaster Management Authority and Gilgit-Baltistan's Public Works Department.

About 240 rescuers are aided by heavy machinery.
