Carbon tax on aviation sector not deal breaker: EU

Libyan Arab Jamahiriya,Environment/Wildlife, Wed, 11 Apr 2012 IANS

Brussels, April 11 (IANS) The European Union has denied charges made by Indian Environment Minister Jayanthi Natrajan that a EU law that charges airlines for carbon emissions is a "deal-breaker" for international climate change talks, EuAsia News reported.

"For ages the European Union has been asked to reduce emissions faster and more than developing countries. We are happy to do that. It is fine with us, EU spokesman for climate action Isaac Valero-Ladron told reporters in Brussels Friday.

"Here is another imitative to reduce emissions from the entire aviations sector in the EU and only a part of the Indian aviation sector, that means Indian flights to Europe."

"So I don't see why this should be a deal breaker in the international climate negotiations if both share the same objectives which is reducing global emissions. I don't see this as a deal breaker," he added.
