Chandigarh, April 11 (IANS) The abductors of a young non-resident Indian (NRI) had planned to kill him after receiving the ransom money, an officer said here Wednesday.

The six abductors, all in their 20s and 30s, who were arrested Tuesday by the Chandigarh Police after a brief shootout near Kurukshetra in Haryana, were remanded to six days police custody by a court here.

The police said that the main accused in the case, Anil Kumar, had confessed that after getting the demanded ransom money, they had planned to eliminate the NRI, Navneet Singh.

They told the police during interrogation that they had planned to kill the NRI by injecting him with Phenergen and Fortwin. The police recovered a total of nine injections and six syringes from the abductors during raids Wednesday.

The Canada-based NRI, Navneet Singh, 28, was rescued from his abductors after a brief shootout near Kurukshetra town, at a dera (sect) campus in Dhurala village, about 130 km from here.

The police told media Tuesday that the accused had come in contact with the NRI some days ago in connection with the sale of property. He had met them Monday to see some land in Haryana but they took him to Sonipat town, 180 km from here, and held him captive. They beat him up and injured him.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Satbir Singh said the abductors had received the ransom money.

The police had recovered over Rs.52 lakh in cash and 760 Canadian Dollars (CAD) from the abductors.

Two of the arrested accused, Ajit and Pradeep are state-level boxers and practice in the boxing stadium of Rohtak and Gurgaon, police said.

Other two accused, Sukhdev and Sanjeev, dealt in property in Kurukshetra.

Police said that all these people formed a gang after they came to know recently that the NRI was looking to buy land.

"Accused Anil Kumar said during interrogation that he got involved in crime in year 2002 and from then three cases of murder, several cases of theft, robbery and dacoity were registered against him in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi," a police release said here.
