New Delhi, April 11 (IANS) With Indian Army chief Gen. V.K. Singh submitting a complaint against a retired officer for offering him a Rs.14 crore bribe, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday began a preliminary enquiry into the matter.
"The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry in a matter related to an alleged offer of bribe to the chief of army staff, by a retired army officer on behalf of a private person, in connection with procurement of vehicles by the Indian Army," the investigation agency said in a statement.
According to the army chief's complaint, the bribe was offered to him in September 2010.
The army chief, in a recent media interview, said that the retired officer had offered the bribe to approve an order for a tranche of nearly 600 trucks of "sub-standard" quality for the army.
In an earlier press release, the army headquarters claimed that the bribe offer had been made by former Defence Intelligence Agency chief Lt. Gen. Tejinder Singh.
Tejinder Singh has already filed a defamation case against the army chief and four other officers in the army headquarters in a Delhi court.
