London, April 10 (IANS) British Prime Minister David Cameron will make a landmark trip this week to Myanmar where he is expected to meet Nobel laureate and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a media report said.

Cameron had earlier described Suu Kyi as an "inspiration", Sky News reported.

The British prime minister is currently on a tour of Japan. He is expected to travel to the Myanmar's new capital Naypyidaw for talks with President Thein Sein, before meeting Suu Kyi in Yangon.

When Suu Kyi was released by the government in November 2010, Cameron heaped praises on her. "Aung San Suu Kyi is an inspiration for all of us who believe in freedom of speech, democracy and human rights," he said.

The exact date of the visit was not mentioned in the report.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Myanmar in December 2011 and met Suu Kyi.

The report said Cameron's visit is seen as another important sign that Myanmar is being welcomed back into the international fold after taking steps to restore democracy.

By-elections held April 1, in which Suu Kyi's opposition party, National League for Democracy, won 43 out of the 44 seats it contested, were praised by the West.
