Dhaka, April 9 (IANS) The US Agency for International Development (USAID) Monday announced a grant of $40 million for the development of Bangladesh's health sector.

The grant would be made available over the next five years, Xinhua reported.

An agreement was signed in Dhaka Monday between the USAID and the World Bank, which administers resources on behalf of Bangladesh's development partners.

According to a World Bank statement, Bangladesh's Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Development Programme (HPNSDP), with an estimated cost of $7.6 billion, is one of the largest health sector programmes in the world.

The Bangladesh government will provide 75 percent of the resources required for the programme.

The development partners currently include Britain, Sweden, the World Bank and now USAID.

They will provide support through a pooled fund, that now stands at $430 million.

The World Bank said additional support is anticipated from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada.
