Bridgetown, Apr 8(ANI): West Indies batsmen Kraigg Brathwaite and Kirk Edwards hit half-centuries to help their side put up a score of 179-3 at stumps against Australia on a rain-shortened opening day of the first cricket Test at Kensington Oval.

Edwards hit an enterprising 61, while opener Brathwaite put up 57 to share a crucial second-wicket partnership of 104 runs.

The West Indies were given a sound start from Brathwaite and Adrian Barath after captain Darren Sammy won the toss, Sports 24 reports.

The pair put up 38 in the first hour and a quarter before Harris claimed Barath's wicket.

Brathwaite and Edwards carried the score to 60-1 at lunch but the latter was as caught and bowled by Warner, who grabbed his maiden Test wicket.

Brathwaite departed soon after tea at 167-3, as Australia tried to make a comeback into the game.

At the close of the day's play, left-hander Darren Bravo was unbeaten on 20, hitting a six and a four off 60 balls, while Shivnarine Chanderpaul was on eight not out before light rain and bad light forced an early end to the game.

For Australia, seamers Ryan Harris (1-29) and Peter Siddle (1-36) emerged as the best bowlers, while part-time leg-spinner David Warner took 1-23. (ANI)
