New Delhi, April 4 (IANS) President Prathiba Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have greeted the nation on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, which will be celebrated Thursday.
In her message, Patil conveyed her "greetings" and "good wishes" to the people.
"May we all resolve to banish violence in thoughts, words and deeds and strive for the establishment of a compassionate and caring society," she said.
Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Mahavir, the founder of Jainism.
While extending his "good wishes" to the people, Ansari said Lord Mahavir, who was an apostle of non-violence, truthfulness, peace and universal love, led mankind on a righteous path.
"His divine teachings are relevant and inspire all to emancipate mankind from suffering," he added.
"On this occasion, let us rededicate ourselves to follow Bhagwan Mahavir's teachings for enduring peace and happiness," Ansari said.
The prime minister said Lord Mahavir's "teachings based on the principle of unity of life inspire us to strive towards the timeless values of truth, non-violence and compassion".
"May this occasion bring happiness and prosperity to all," he added.
