Former England fast bowler Gough says Strauss should never be sacked

London, Tue, 03 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 3(ANI): Former England fast bowler Darren Gough believes England skipper Andrew Strauss should never be dropped as the Test captain due to his brilliant track record.

Strauss in one of England's most successful cap, and led the team to an emphatic Ashes triumph, and to the top of ICC's Test rankings, but four consecutive Test defeats, and his own slump in form means, he is under tremendous pressure to perform.

But, Gough believes Strauss should never be sacked, as he is still the right person to lead England, and only he should take the decision to step down as the captain if England doesn't performs.

"It will be Strauss' decision if he walks away and not anybody else's. He won't, and should not, really ever lose his position as captain. He has enough points in the bag to remain in charge this summer in the Test series against West Indies and South Africa," The Sun quoted Gough, as saying.

"He's earned that right because of what he has achieved as a player and captain over a number of years," he said.

"If his low scores continue and team continue to under-perform, then Strauss will be brave enough to make his own mind up and step aside to let Cooky take over. But he should not pay the price as he is still the best man to take England forward," he added. (ANI)
