London, Mar 30(ANI): Former golfing great Colin Montgomerie believes that Ryder Cup teammates, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald can dominate the sport for years to come, and could develop a rivalry for the top spot like that of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in tennis.
English ace Donald is back at No.1 in the world after a victory in a play-off at the Transitions Championship in Florida this month.
He previously topped the rankings for 40 weeks from last May, before McIlroy snatched it for two weeks when he won the Honda Classic.
Former European Ryder Cup captain Montgomerie thinks the pair will fight it out at the top for the foreseeable future like Nadal and Federer famously did from July 2005 to September 2009.
"Having been No.1, Rory will want that accolade back again. You have two guys there at the top of the tree like Federer and Nadal, competing together for four or five years," the Daily Mail quoted Montgomerie, as saying.
"It is very exciting to see what will happen. Donald is the forgotten man but the No.1 in the SERVING world. I love the way Luke Donald plays the game in an old-fashioned way on very young shoulders," he added.
"He plays his own game and is not interested in anyone else. He hits the ball a certain length off the tee and positions it well. He plays chess with the course," he said. (ANI)
