Strong opposition delays Pak debate on terms of engagement with US

Islamabad, Wed, 28 Mar 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Mar 28 (ANI): A strong resistance put up by the opposition in Pakistan has compelled the government to delay a debate on the Parliamentary Committee on National Security's (PCNS) recommendations to review terms of engagement with the US.

The government, however, assured the opposition it would not take a one-sided decision and would address the concerns raised by the opposition, the Daily Times reports.

Earlier, opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan pointed out clause-by-clause objections of the opposition.

Insisting that the government should deal with the flaws first, Nisar said: "These recommendations are not enforceable."

"What would be the worth of parliament if we pass these recommendations... parliament will be held responsible if another incident such as Raymond Davis takes place," he added.

Speaking on a point of order, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman said his party would strongly oppose reopening of NATO supply route.

Fazl said "I warn the government against reopening the route. The government will not implement its decision on the ground." Stressing for the need of devising a mechanism for internal peace and security in the country. (ANI)
