BJP urges UPA-II government to consider court verdict over governor's appointment

New Delhi, Tue, 27 Mar 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 27 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday urged the central government to take into cognizance of court's verdict over the appointment of governors in light of the federal structure of the Constitution.

The BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said The office of the governor is meant to help the state government and not to disturb the it.

"The governor shouldn't be seen as another power centre in a federal structure. The Indian government should take cognizance of the court's verdict in light of tensions (between governor and chief minister) in the states. It is in the interest of the federal structure. The office of the governor is meant to help the (state) government and not to disturb the (state) government," Hussain told reporters in New Delhi.

The Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla said the government would respond after studying the verdict.

"The officials of the home ministry and legal experts will study the verdict and then the government would be in a position to react to it," Shukla said.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court today gave the Centre two weeks time to file its response on a petition seeking direction to consult chief minister before appointing the governor.

It was asked in the petition that the appointment of the governor should be done in consultation with the chief minister of the concerned state.

The petition said that issue of appointment and removal of the Governor was between the President and the Prime Minister and there was no role of the Home Ministry. (ANI)
