New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) Shiva Thapa advanced into the final of the 56 kg category at the Boxing Grand Prix in Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic while Vikas Krishan lost his semifinal bout in the 69 kg to settle for a bronze.
Shiva, a silver medallist at the 2010 Youth Olympics, defeated local boxer Velky Patrik 9:5 in the last four stage Friday.
The 18-year-old, made an aggressive start with several lightening fast combinations and reflexes. Going into the final with a four point lead, Shiva warded-off some heavy hitting from the Czech boxer and kept adding to his point tally with counter attacks.
Thapa has also cemented his place in the Indian squad for the Asian Olympic Qualifying tournament in Kazakhstan, beating his more experienced counterparts for the spot.
"I have a good rhythm going on in the tournament and am very happy with my performance. I hope carry on the same form in the finals as well," said Shiva from the Czech Republic. He will take on Italian boxer Vittorio Jahyn Parrinnelo in the final.
Vikas, who has secured a berth at the London Olympics, fought well against Arisnoide Despaigne of Cuba, but came up short in the end.
The score two all after the opening three minutes of play. In the second round, the Cuban, slowly started to take the game away from Vikas.
The India tried to reduce the margin but failed in his attempt to lose 9:14.
