South Africa,Diplomacy,Politics, Fri, 23 Mar 2012 IANS

Addis Ababa, March 23 (IANS) The African Union (AU) Friday suspended Mali from its membership after Malian soldiers announced they have taken power in the country.

The union Thursday condemned the unconstitutional change of power in the country by the mutineers.

The suspension came here at the meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council which deliberated on the current situation in the west African nation, Xinhua reported.

Mutinous soldiers seized power in Mali after storming the presidential palace and arresting some of the government ministers, a spokesperson for the mutinous soldiers said Thursday.

The National Committee for Redressment of Democracy and Restoration of the State (CNRDR) announced through Malian radio and television Thursday that they had toppled Mali's President Amadou Toumani Toure.
