London, Mar 23(ANI): The European Union is set to impose sanctions on Syria's First Lady British-born Asma al-Assad today.
The move comes after what appear to be private emails from Syrian President Bashar al Assad, his wife and other members of their inner circle, showed her busy buying luxury goods from London and Paris, including jewellery, a 2,650 pound vase and 10,000 pound worth of candlesticks, tables and chandeliers in the wake of the regime's brutal crackdown protestors.
The EU sanctions are also likely to be imposed on Assad's other family members, his mother, sister and sister-in-law and institutions, The Guardian reports.
European companies could also be banned from doing business with two more Syrian entities.
Meanwhile, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed that government forces and army defectors are engaged in fierce clashes in the town of Azaz in the northern province of Aleppo that has left at least three soldiers dead.
The Washington Post report has alleged that Syrian rebels are running out of ammunition and added that black market supplies are drying up as neighboring countries have stepped up security on their borders.
Opposition activists have dismissed a UN security council statement calling for a ceasefire to allow dialogue on a political solution.
Assad's regime also played down the UN statement, saying Damascus is under no threats or ultimatums. (ANI)
