Ex Rutgers Indian-origin student does not regret passing on no-jail plea deal

Washington, Mar 22 (ANI): A former Indian- origin Rutgers student, who has been convicted for web-streaming his gay roommate's encounter, has said he does not regret passing on a no-jail plea deal.

"I'm never going to regret not taking the plea. If I took the plea, I would have had to testify that I did what I did to intimidate Tyler and that would be a lie," The New York Post quoted Dharun Ravi, as saying.

"I won't ever get up there and tell the world I hated Tyler because he was gay, or tell the world I was trying to hurt or intimidate him because it's not true," he added

Ravi had set up a webcam to spy on an intimate encounter between gay room-mate, Tyler Clementi and his date in their dorm room in September 2010.

Clementi had subsequently committed suicide when he came to know that his encounter had been web-streamed.

Ravi said he only set up the spyware because of how Clementi's date looked.

"If it was a girl who came to the room and she looked as strange as [he did], I would have done the same thing," Ravi said.

He added that when he learnt about Clementi's disappearance from campus, he suspected his date's role in it.

"I thought it was something sinister, that maybe he got mixed up with the wrong guy," Ravi said. (ANI)
