Washington, Mar 21 (ANI): Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has comfortably won the Illinois Republican primary, enlarging his lead in the race for the party's presidential nomination.
According to The Washington Post, Romney was leading rival Rick Santorum by more than 12 points.
Romney had collected 47.1 percent of the vote to Santorum's 34.8 percent, the report said.
Texas Republican Ron Paul was came third in the race with nine percent of the vote, followed by former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who garnered seven percent.
In his victory speech, Romney criticized President Barack Obama, saying his administration have brought Americans "fewer jobs, shrinking paychecks, historic drops in income and historic highs in gas prices."
"After years of too many apologies and not enough jobs, historic drops in income and historic highs in gas prices, a president who doesn't hesitate to use all the means necessary to force through Obamacare on the American public but leads from behind in the world, it's time to say ... enough," the paper quoted Romney, as saying.
"We know our future is brighter than these troubled times. We still believe in America and we deserve a President who believes in us," he added.
According to the paper, the results are likely to renew questions about Santorum's viability and prompt Romney to more forcefully embrace the rhetoric of a general election candidate. (ANI)
