Islamabad, Mar 19 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has backed his government's decision to give India the status of the Most Favoured Nation (FMN), saying that his country cannot afford a war with India, and it was taking decisions in the larger national interests.
"When China, the US and rest of the world is establishing trade relations with India, why shouldn't Pakistan do so?" the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.
Last month, Pakistan had deferred its decision to finalize a list of goods it does not want to import from India, an important step towards granting it the most favoured nation (MFN) status.
Once the MFN status is granted, Pakistan will have to treat India on par with its other favoured trading partners.
India unilaterally gave MFN status to Pakistan in 1996.
After the announcement, many across the country staged protests to condemn the decision of granting MFN status to India.
Gilani, however, said the move should not be made an issue as Pakistan is interested in boosting trade with neighbouring countries. (ANI)
