Beijing, Mar 15 (ANI): Several hundred Tibetans launched a protest against Chinese rule after a monk self immolated himself in the country's Qinghai province.
According to Free Tibet and the International Campaign for Tibet, a monk in his 30s named Jamyang Palden, set fire to himself outside a monastery in the town of Tongren.
He suffered burns, but is thought to have survived.
Free Tibet said that about 500 monks gathered to show their solidarity with the monk and they were joined by people from the surrounding area, The BBC reports.
The campaign group said there were also protests by hundreds of Tibetan students in three schools in the area, some calling for freedom to study in Tibetan.
In the past year over 25 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest against Chinese religious and political repression.
On Wednesday China's Premier Wen Jiabao said he was distressed by the self-immolations, and described them as "radical moves, which undermine social harmony". (ANI)
