Redknapp's cheeky jibe on Arabs lands him in hot water

London, Wed, 14 Mar 2012 ANI

London, Mar 14(ANI): Tottenham Hotspurs' manager Harry Redknapp has been cautioned to control his language after giving a controversial remark on Arabs.

He has been told to be bit more careful while saying anything in public, as he is the fan favorite for the vacant post of England's manager.

When Redknapp was asked about the foreign investment in the Premier League during an interview, he replied: "Where they find some owners now, I don't know. I remember the first guy they brought in at Portsmouth from Saudi Arabia somewhere. He looked like they pulled him off the stall outside. He looked like the only Arab who didn't have oil in his garden."

Quite visibly, Redknapp was referring to the former Portsmouth shareholder Sulaiman Al Fahim, who had to renounce his stake in the club in 2010 after failing to deliver on a 50 million pound investment the club, which was promised.

The Football Association, which has yet to move toward any candidate or their club with a formal request to discuss the England vacancy, refused to comment on Redknapp's remark.

But, football's anti-racist community has taken a note of Redknapp's cheeky remark, and warned him to be careful in future.

"That's just part of Harry's humour, a comment like that, and I wouldn't take it in any other spirit than how it has been delivered," The Telegraph quoted one of the senior anti-racist campaigners, as saying.

"He's quick and he's got that cheekiness. But if he is the England manager it's different. There is a different conduct and etiquette required," he added.

Another activist said: "Harry is not a racist - he's always had black players around. But he is always going to be clumsy with what he says. You can't say that sort of thing in the England manager post." (ANI)
