Washington, Mar 13(ANI): About half of Republican voters in Alabama and Mississippi believe US President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and about one in four respondents said his parents' inter-racial marriage should have been illegal, a new poll has found.
The automated survey by Public Policy Polling also found that 52 percent of Mississippi Republicans said they believed Obama is a Muslim, 36 percent said they were not sure and only 12 percent said he is a Christian.
He fared slightly better in Alabama, where 45 percent said he is a Muslim, 41 percent said they were not sure, while 14 percent said he is a Christian, The Los Angeles Times reports.
The poll indicates where both states fall on the political spectrum as well as continued skepticism among Republicans about Obama's religion.
Obama is the son of a white mother and a black father, a marriage that remains objectionable to many Republican voters in two of the last states forced by the Supreme Court to allow inter- racial marriage.
The PPP poll also found that 67 percent of Alabama Republicans said interracial marriage should be legalised, while 21 percent opposed it.
At least 54 percent of Mississippi Republicans said it should be allowed, while 29 percent said it should remain illegal.
The PPP poll used automated telephone interviews to survey 1,256 likely Republican voters in Mississippi and Alabama between March 10 and 11. (ANI)
