Washington, Mar.13 (ANI): U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said that the soldier responsible for the alleged massacre of 16 Afghan citizens could face the death penalty.
Outrage has mounted in Afghanistan after the alleged gunning down of 16 villagers in their homes.
Taliban insurgents have vowed revenge, while Afghan lawmakers have called for putting the American soldier on a public trial.
"My understanding is, in these instances, (the death penalty) could be a consideration," the Herald Sun quoted Panetta, as telling reporters traveling with him on a flight to Kyrgyzstan.
Bloomberg News further quoted Panetta, as saying: "We are following the procedures that we follow in these situations to review the case and then bring appropriate charges."
"War is hell. These kinds of events and incidents are going to take place. But we cannot allow these events to undermine our strategy or the mission," he added. (ANI)
