Gilani refuses to write to Swiss Govt. for re-opening corruption cases against Zardari

Islamabad, Mon, 12 Mar 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Mar 12 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said he is firm on his stand of not writing a letter to the Swiss authorities to re-open corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The Supreme Court has given a deadline of March 21 to the prime minister to write the letter.

But Gilani said: "We would not have waited for so long were we to write the letter to the Swiss authorities. I will follow the Constitution which gives immunity to the office of the president."

"All over the world there is immunity for the president, prime minister and foreign minister. I do not have the prerogative to take a decision about the immunity issue because it rests with parliament," he added.

He further said that "parliament, not I" should be charged for contempt of court for giving immunity.

"Had I been the Chief Justice of Pakistan, I would have referred the immunity issue to parliament," he added. (ANI)
