Islamabad, Mar 12 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Lt General Zaheerul Islam has been appointed as the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief on merit, and with an intention of making "a fresh start".
"Islam has been appointed on merit as it has been generally prescribed, and now it will have to be seen what he has to deliver in this regard. Islam's appointment is a change and will be a fresh start," The Express Tribune quoted Gilani, as saying.
Lt Gen Islam was appointed ISI chief last week, ending months of speculation about a possible third extension to incumbent Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha whose tenure ends on March 18.
Fifty-six-year-old Islam, currently the corps commander in Karachi, is considered close to army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. He served as Deputy ISI Director from 2008 to 2010. (ANI)
