Jats call off quota stir

Hissar, Sun, 11 Mar 2012 ANI

Hisar, Mar 11 (ANI): The Jat community, which had been holding protests for the last few weeks demanding reservation in government jobs and educational institutions under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category, called off their stir on Sunday following discussions with the government.

The government is also expected to release the jailed Jat leaders following the compromise that was reached between the two sides late on Saturday night.

"The honourable chief minister took this decision (to accept the demand of letting the Jat leaders free). We hope that our state will thrive now," said a Jat leader.

Meanwhile, a police official here also informed that the Jat leaders presently under custody would be set free.

" Those people, who are under the government's custody would be free. We will let them off from the jail. This is the decision of the chief minister," he said.

Another Jat protestor here said the leaders of the community would decide the future course of action.

"We have not decided anything yet. We want our leaders to be free. They are the ones who will decide our further policies," he added.

Members of the Jat community had blocked several roads for almost three weeks. A 20-year-old youth was killed and several others were injured in the clash that took place between the police and villagers here earlier this week.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had earlier asked the protestors to wait for the commission's report on reservation. (ANI)
