Kiwis end second day of Dunedin Test with five run lead in first innings over Proteas

Dunedin, Mar 8(ANI): New Zealand edged past South Africa to claim a narrow first inning lead on second day of the Dunedin Test


With batsmen Trent Boult and Chris Martin still at the crease, New Zealand will resume tomorrow on 243-9 in their first innings, having a five run lead over South Africa in response to latter's score of 238.


None of the Kiwi batsmen could score above 50 runs but Brendon McCullum (48), Daniel Vettori (46), Ross Taylor (44) and debutant Kruger van Wyk (36) made significant contributions to the total score, reportsouth African paceman Vernon Philander starred for his side by claiming 4-50 in his fifth Test, while Morne Morkel's performance (2-52) was second best.


McCullum and Taylor earlier had a 55-run partnership after New Zealand lost Rob Nicol (6) and Martin Guptill's (16) wickets early.


Vettori and van Wyk edged New Zealand closer to a first innings lead with a stand of 53.


Vettori hit eight fours in his 78-ball knock, while Van Wyk batted 129 minutes and faced 92 balls on debut.


Doug Bracewell hit a crucial 25 off 46 balls before being castled by Steyn.
