Most Pakistanis believe Osama's mysterious presence in Abbottabad will remain a mystery forever

Islamabad, Mar 8 (ANI): The Pakistan government may have promised to get to the roots of the mystery surrounding Osama bin Laden's presence in the Abbottabad compound, yet few believe that the Abbottabad Commission will succeed in doing so.

How did the C.I.A. track him down? And, perhaps most important, did Pakistan's generals know he was living a stone's throw from their leading military academy? These are some of the questions that sprung up in the international arena following the al-Qaeda leader's killing.

However, many believe that despite its claims, the Pakistani government is now more interested in moving on than seeking answers.

This, they believe, is evident from the way the local authorities in Abbottabad sent bulldozers to demolish Bin Laden's house on the night of February 25, erasing a painful symbol of an embarrassing episode for the military.

Publication of the commission's findings, originally scheduled for December, has repeatedly been postponed, and critics of the government feel that political pressure is mounting to subdue the findings.

Suspicious of official explanations of Bin Laden's life and death, a retired Pakistan Army brigadier named Qadir set out to find his own truth, but admitted that his ISI briefers may have concealed crucial facts.

"I'd be a bloody fool if I didn't see that. I don't say this is the entire truth. But it's the closest you will get at this point in time," The New York Times quoted him, as saying.

Qadir voiced his suspicion over the Abbottabad report like many others in Pakistan, saying: "You have to ask the right questions to get the right answers. I doubt this report will explain anything to anyone's satisfaction."

Bin Laden, the mastermind of the 11 September 2001 attacks and the world's most wanted man, was killed in a US operation in north-western Pakistan, very near to the Pakistani military institution, on May 2 last year. (ANI)
