New Delhi, Mar 7 (ANI): President Pratibha Devising Patil on Wednesday appealed to the women of the country to come forward in greater extent and participate actively in the development processes.
Speaking on the occasion of International Women's Day celebrations here at Vigyan Bhawan, Patil lauded the women's increasing contribution in the societal progress on all fronts.
She, however, lamented on the low girl child sex ratio, which was at 914.
President Patil also gave away Stree Shakti Puraskar 2011, on the occasion, to six women who had made immense contribution in the social educational and economical upliftment of women in various sectors.
Minister of State (I/C) for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath, who was also present at the event, expressed satisfaction at the progress of various ongoing schemes for the welfare of women.
She said that the "Sabla" scheme for adolescent girls has been yielding good results and making the so called "Abla(weak)" woman now "Sabla(strong)" .
Tirath informed that 56 departments of government have established gender budgeting cells.
The International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. (ANI)
