Washington, Mar 6(ANI): An Indian-origin former Rutgers student said he wanted to "keep the gays away" after he used his webcam to capture a hostel room-mate Tyler Clementi kissing his date in their dorm room, a student has testified.
According to the friend's testimony, text messages exchanged between Dharun Ravi and his friend revealed the latter's apparent discomfort with Clementi's sexuality.
A Cornell University student, Michelle Huang said Ravi had sent him a text message to invite her to tune in to a live streaming secret video of Clementi's follow-up date with the man.
"I got so creeped out after Sunday. Yeah keep the gays away," Ravi wrote.
Ravi told Huang that he had set up the web cam to catch a repeat performance and invited her to tune in.
"Do it for real. I have it pointed at his bed. And the monitor is off so he can't see you. Be careful it could get nasty," he added.
Huang said Ravi told her that people were planning a "viewing party with a bottle of Bacardi and beer" to watch the web stream that night, the New York Post reports.
Clementi later committed suicide after he learnt about the incident.
Huang later testified Ravi texted her that the talk of a viewing party was a joke after Clementi's death.
Ravi is currently facing a trial in a New Jersey courtroom on bias intimidation and invasion of privacy charges that could land him in jail for 10 years.
He is, however, not charged with Clementi's death. (ANI)
