At least 15 dead, 54 wounded in Poland train collision

Warsaw, Sun, 04 Mar 2012 ANI

Warsaw, Mar 4(ANI): Atleast 15 people have reportedly been killed and 54 injured in a train collision in southern Poland.

Two trains collided as they were traveling on the same track, a board member of the state railway company PKP, Andrzej Pawlowski was quoted, as saying.

He said one of the trains, which was traveling south from Warsaw to Krakow, should not have been on the track.

The other train, travelling from the eastern city of Przemysl to Warsaw, was on the correct track, Pawlowski added.

It was not immediately clear how the southbound train ended up on the wrong track.

Video showed white and green train cars lying twisted across the rails.

"It is more dramatic than the pictures show. This is our most tragic rail disaster for many years. There are several dozen wounded and this may increase. People have been killed - this is the most tragic information. We do not know the exact number of casualties so far," The Guardian quoted Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as saying.

"Everything indicates that this is one of the most serious railway catastrophes of recent years in our country. There are people who have died, there are many injured people," Poland's Transport Minister Slawomir Nowak said. (ANI)
