New Delhi, Mar 1 (ANI): The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), which function as a body corporate under the Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, became operational from today.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has notified the establishment of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) with effect from March 1, 2012 under the Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010.
The LPAI comprises a chairman and two whole-time members and will have representation of officials concerned from the Centre and the States.
The office of the Land Ports Authority of India shall temporarily, be located at Vigyan Bhawan Annexe till the LPAI sets up its own Head Quarter at New Delhi.
The LPAI has been tasked with the responsibility of putting in place systems which address security imperatives relating to the cross border movement of passengers, vehicles and goods as also developing Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) at designated points along the international borders of India.
In the first phase, seven Integrated Check Posts are proposed to be set up, of which five are under construction. The Integrated Check Post at Attari is expected to be operationalised shortly. (ANI)
