Tokyo Sky Tree becomes world's tallest tower

London, Thu, 01 Mar 2012 ANI

London, Mar 1 (ANI): The Tokyo Sky Tree, whose construction finished two months late because of the quake and tsunami that struck Japan last March, is currently the tallest tower in the world.

Construction of the 634-metre tower near the already popular Asakusa traditional district on Tokyo's eastern side, began in July 2008.

"The construction was originally scheduled to finish in December 2011 but was delayed due to a shortage of supplies after the disaster," the Daily Mail quotyed a spokesman for the operator as saying.

The Tokyo Sky Tree is currently the tallest tower in the world. It is taller than Canton Tower, the tallest structure on an island, taller than Taipei 101, and the second tallest structure in the world, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Originally planned to stand 610 meters high, Sky Tree set the new height after getting wind that the Guangzhou tower was going to be the same height.

Now that the tower has been completed, the operator plans to finish the interior for stores and other facilities with an eye to opening them to the public on May 22.

"We will use all today to complete the procedures for getting control of the tower by conducting on-the-spot checks of the structure," the spokesman added. (ANI)
