Bareilly, Feb 28 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati over the rising number of rape cases in the state.
Addressing a public rally here, Yadav said: "The state chief of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati, should answer that around how many Dalit people has she met during her rule? She should say what efforts she has made for the Dalit people. Can anybody from the crowd answer what kind of work she has done for the welfare of the Dalits? She has not done a single thing for them."
"A large number of Dalit daughters have been raped during her rule that has not been seen during any party's regime. These were not ordinary rapes. Around 1900 rape cases have been registered, out of which the daughters of the Dalits have suffered to the maximum extent," he added.
Yadav's comments came just days after a teenage girl was gang-raped by five young men in Uttar Pradesh's Noida city.
Yadav further accused Mayawati of misusing public funds to build statues of herself and elephants, the symbol of her Bahujan Samaj Party, rather than for welfare and development projects.
"The public money is for the public the only. The funds are not for constructing elephants and building monuments," he said.
Over 60 percent polling was recorded in the sixth and penultimate phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls on Tuesday.
The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.
The first, second, third, fourth and fifth phases of polling occurred on February 8, 11, 15, 19, and 23 respectively. A new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March.
The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
