Islamabad , Tue, 28 Feb 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Feb 28 (ANI): At least 18 people were killed when gunmen opened fire on a passenger bus in Kohistan district of Pakistan on Thursday, police have said.

The bus was carrying at least 25 passengers from Gilgit to Rawalpindi.

The motive was unclear as Islamist militants are not active in the area, police said.

"Armed men hiding on both sides of the road attacked the bus," The News quoted local police chief Mohammad Ilyas, as saying.

"Initial reports said 18 people have died and seven wounded," he added.

The ambush happened near the town of Harban, 130 miles north of the capital Islamabad. (ANI)
