Centre sends notice to anti-Kudankulam activist

New Delhi, Sat, 25 Feb 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Feb.24 (ANI): The Central Government on Saturday sent a show cause notice to anti-nuclear activist Uday Kumar, and asked him to explain his links with a Sweden-funded NGO called IDEA.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Office V.Narayansamy said that he had sent the notice to Kumar, and added that foreign currency accounts of three NGOs spending money on the anti-nuclear movement have been suspended.

He said that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has decided to file a counter to Kumar's defamation case against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Narayanaswamy said he had no intention of defaming Uday Kumar, while the latter claimed that he is only part of the expert panel of the NGO.

Narayansamy also claimed that Kumar and his wife were running another NGO called Saccer and added that the government had proof that it too was getting funds from abroad.

Responding to the show cause notice from the Centre, Kumar said the Central Government cannot play with the sentiments of the public.

Criticizing Narayanasamy's move, he further said he would file a lawsuit against the former, and added that anti-Kudankulam plant activists would take part in rally and in a public meeting on Sunday in which many political leaders, including MDMK leader Vaiko would be present.

Describing the Centre's reaction to the anti-nuclear protests as awful, Kumar claimed that even s Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa is not in favour of the Kudankulam nuke plant.

Kumar reiterated that he would file a defamation case against Prime Minister Singh over his statement that the NGOs based in the US and in some Scandinavian countries were fuelling the Kudankulam nuclear plant protests.

He has said that Dr. Singh needs to prove the charge or step down.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to India Peter Burleigh has said that America has no objection to the nuclear programme in India. (ANI)
