London, Feb 25(ANI): England midfielder Steven Gerrard has said he felt 'suicidal' after scoring a late own goal during his last encounter with Chelsea in the Carling Cup final of 2005.
He was in the Liverpool team, which was beaten 3-2 by Chelsea after extra time at the Millennium Stadium, after he was strongly linked with a move to the Blues before the build up of that match.
Gerrard has said he feared fans questioning his highly publicized move to Stamford Bridge as the reason behind the late goal.
"I was linked with Chelsea for a while before that final. So to score an own-goal and lose was a nightmare for me. There were Liverpool fans that probably thought I meant the own-goal at the time," The Sun quoted Gerrard, as saying.
"I felt suicidal. It was one of the worst days I have had, especially coming against Chelsea," he said.
Gerrard reckons there is a steadily rising belief that Kenny Dalglish's men are moving along the same lines as the 2001 side, which lifted the FA, League and UEFA Cups.
He said: "The feeling is quite similar. I think if we deliver the Carling Cup it will give us the confidence and can be a catalyst for the team."
"Before we won that treble we were improving slowly and I think that's what is happening here. The new players are settling in well and getting better and better. You can see how the team is going," Gerrard added.
The Merseyside giants are odds-on favorites to beat Championship outfit Cardiff - and this time Gerrard is determined there will be no slip-ups. (ANI)
