Fishermen killings: Kerala Police begins inspection of Italian vessel

Kochi, Feb.25 (ANI): Police in Kerala Police, an Italian team and two experts have begun searching the Italian ship, Enrica Lexie, for weapons allegedly used by two naval guards in the killing of two fishermen on February 15.

 

Kollam and Kochi Police Commissioners Debesh Kumar Behera and M R Ajith Kumar, a team of police officers and a forensic expert boarded the tanker.

 

They were accompanied by a ten-member Italian delegation, including two Italian ballistic experts Major Flebus Luca and Major Fratini Paolo,

 

The two Italian marines-Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone-are in judicial custody and a Kollam court has permitted police to seize the arms allegedly used to fire on the fishermen.

 

The Italian vessel was brought to the Kochi port on Friday.

 

The two naval guards have been charged with murder of the fishermen. The Italian government maintains that the guards opened fire on the assumption that the fishermen were pirates. (ANI)
